This was difficult for me because naturally, I have terrible penmanship. As an artist, I am highly invested in the aesthetic appeal of most anything, but it’s hard to be with something that seems as trivial as my response to a question in class. Because penmanship is kind of a lost art, due to computers, it’s hard to make it a priority. I rarely have to write with a pen or pencil unless it’s a worksheet or something similar, because all papers and such like are almost always typed. But, mark-making is very satisfying, and I found that when I thought of the words and individual letters as art rather than arbitrary symbols it was much easier for me to make them look nicer than the scribbles I’m used to penning. I’m definitely still an amateur, and my letters lack that pleasing, type-face consistency in form and shape that calligraphers can produce, but overall I’m not entirely displeased with my attempt at a new skill.
